This pictorial map of Southeast Asia and the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography.
Indonesia takes up the center of the map, with Southeast Asia just above. The map highlights important cities of the regions like Batavia (Jakarta), Makassar, and Hanoi. Around the print are vignettes of historical scenes and figures. The upper left hand corner shows the Angkor Wat temple complex. Also pictured are Ha Long Bay, Balinese and Cambodian dancers, and the 1873 death of French explorer François Garnier in Hanoi.
The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.
