A wonderful little handkerchief / map of downtown Chicago, made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the beloved Marshall Field & Co. established in 1852.

What began as a dry goods store on 137 Lake Street, opened by Potter Palmer grew with the city of Chicago over the years and for Chicagoans would be regarded as their answer to Macy's in New York City (est. 1858). It wouldn't receive its well-known name until 1881 when Marshall Field, with the support of his junior partners, bought the business, renaming it "Marshall Field & Company."

The location of the business moved several times before landing in its permanent home on State Street under the direction of Daniel Burnham and Charles Atwood in 1893. The iconic green clocks were added later that year, as the Columbian Exposition World's Fair was in full swing. The nine-story department store would serve Chicagoans for well over 100 years until it was eventually acquired by Macy's on September 9, 2006, a dark and sad day for the city of Chicago.

This handkerchief map centers on the downtown Chicago, otherwise known as "the Loop." An inner square border shows the many buildings with which the store resided, which curiously covers the location of Marshal Field's at the time of the 100th anniversary. Other landmarks such as Buckingham Fountain, Shedd Aquarium, Naval Reserve and Armory, Merchandise Mart, and the Federal Building can be found within the map. An outer border features men, women, and children donning the garb of 19th century Chicagoans and the four corners are adorned with the iconic green clocks flanked by the number 100 with text within reading "the clock strikes a century 1850-1892."

Condition: This handkerchief / map is in A condition with no staining, tears, or frayed edges. The printing and colors are bright and bold throughout.
