1891 Map No.1 Valuation of Real Property... City of Washington
DESCRIPTION
This interesting city plan of Washington D.C. highlights the city block by block according to their property value as determined by an assessment in 1887. A color coded legend assigns value from less than $0.50 to more the $5 per square foot.
According to this valuation, the United States Capitol Grounds and the Whitehouse (identified as the Executive Mansion) was valued at over $5 per square foot, while the National Mall, now home to the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument was valued at $1 - $2 per square foot. The Judicial Courthouse and grounds received a valuation of $3 - $5 per square foot and the U.S. Navy Yard, a valuation of $2 - $3 per square foot.
This map was one of twelve statistical maps produced in an effort to present large-scale improvements in the infrastructure of the city since the Greene maps of 1880. Each map was drawn on an identical scale and included the prefix “Statistical Map No" before each unique title. This map and its counterparts offer a unique glimpse into the state of development in the Capitol of the United States just before the turn of the 20th Century.
