This map is one from a series of the great navigator George Vancouver’s important and influential work which resulted from his exploration of the West Coast of America in the late eighteenth century. The map covers the territory from Christian Sound in the south to the territories just northwest of Bering Bay in the north. This series of maps set a watermark for their time, and continued to be used well into the nineteenth century. Not only the coastline, but also the capes and sounds, waterways and canals of the region are all so precisely detailed that navigation of the region could be undertaken with some degree of confidence.

Today Vancouver is memorialized by Vancouver Island, which he discovered, the Hudson Bay Company's Fort Vancouver, the city of Vancouver, Vancouver Peninsula Australia, Mount Vancouver, the 8th highest mountain in Canada, Vancouver Bay in Jervis Inlet, and the Vancouver Maritime Museum. For his 250th birthday, the Canada Post issued a special postage stamp in his honor.

Condition: This folding map would be in A condition were it not for someone having drawn an image in ink on the verso, with the ink penetrating the paper through to the image. Condition is B.
