This is an original vintage pictorial map of the Loire Valley wine region of France, on the Loire river in the northwestern part of the country. Though the majority of the wine grown in this region is white wine, there are red wines made from Cabernet franc grapes as well. Loire wines tend to exhibit fruit-forward and crisp flavors, especially in their youth. The Loire region has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 1st century AD. In the Medieval Era, the wines of the Loire Valley were the most highly regarded wines in both England and France, even more so than wines from Bordeaux.
The map shows both the wine growing areas of the Loire Valley as well as some of the region’s famous châteaus, including Château de Chenonceau and Château de Chambord. The map highlights cities along the Loire like Nantes, Angers, Tours, Blois, and Orléans. Near the bottom of the frame stands a man and a woman in a vineyard admiring the grapes. Framing the map and the châteaus is a yellow, green, and brown column or balustrade.
At the top is the title text “Les vignobles de France” (“The vineyards of France”), and at the bottom is the subheading “Vins du Val de Loire” (“Wines from the Loire Valley”).
Sopexa is an international communications and marketing company headquartered in Paris. Founded in 1961, they provide marketing assistance to food and beverage companies. This series of wine maps were produced by Sopexa in collaboration with the Comité National des Vins de France in the 1970s.
