This gaily colored vintage poster was published by Sopexa to promote the wines of the Champagne region of France. Located in northeastern France, this historical and renowned region produces what is considered to be the world’s finest sparkling wines. While the word Champagne is often used as a general term to describe all sparkling wine, true Champagne comes only from this region in France, which is colorfully depicted in this poster.

The poster shows various cities of the region and the vineyards which produce one of the world’s favorite libations. Interestingly, hundreds of years ago champagne was considered to be the result of faulty wine making, in a region where wine makers were trying to produce burgundy-like still wines but were forced by the region’s climate to employ a different approach during the fermentation process. Eventually local wine makers came to embrace the style and its product came to be loved by connoisseurs around the globe. The topsoil of this area is unique in the world, and France jealously guards the use of the word Champagne for the labeling of sparkling wines.

Condition: This brightly colored linen-backed vintage poster is in B condition with a paper pull in the lower left corner that has removed the "V" in "Verzenay" and some of the grass from the image above. The map has been linen-backed for preservation and presentation purposes.
