Date: 1890 (circa) Denver, CO

Dimensions: 14.25 x 17.5 inches (36.2 x 44.5 cm)

This is a highly detailed railroad map of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway system during that late 19th century. The map shows much of Colorado from just east of the front range to Salt Lake City and Salina, Utah in the west, with portions of southern Wyoming and northern New Mexico also included. In the lower left, an inset map shows an extended connection from San Francisco, California to Kansas City, Missouri, Omaha, Nebraska, and Council Bluffs Iowa.

The railway lines are delineated throughout the map in differentiated in color as to whether they are Standard Gague, Narrow Gague, or Three Rail lines. The larger cities of Santa Fe, Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Denver, and Salt Lake City are all connected by the railway system along with important mining towns of the era, such as Leadville, Cripple Creek, Crested Butte, and Ouray to name a few. Mountain topography is shown with bronze coloring, ranges are noted as well as a number of individual peaks with the altitude of their summit included.

This map was issued in “a complete tourist’s guide” by Stanley Wood. While the exact date is unknown, we can surmise it is from the late 19th century based on the extent of the railway and towns listed within the map.

Condition: This map is in excellent condition. Issued folded and on very thin paper, it has been linen-backed for preservation and presentation purposes, a completely reversible process.
