This striking map of Greece in antiquity, and some of its bordering territories was issued hand-colored for the third American edition of the Atlas. The map is accompanied by encyclopedic text describing not only the geography of mainland Greece and its many islands, but also historic events, important historical figures including kings, philosophers, poets, historians, physicians, musicians, architects and artists.
It names the ‘Seven Sages of Greece’, along with the cities of each. Thales of Miletus is one of the better known, and is credited with being the first to study astronomy, for discovering and describing Ursa Minor, and determining the intervals between solstices, to name but a few of his merit worthy accomplishments.
Government, religion, and the various locations of important festivals and athletic games are described. Major colonies established by Greeks in antiquity are denoted, as are wars, battles and sieges. The map presents a dense compilation of fact, fable and legend of ancient Greece.
Condition: This hand-coloured map on lovely heavy paper is in A- condition. Some toning in the upper half at the centerfold.
