This rare bright pictorial map of Rhodes, referred to in Greece as both the Island of Roses and the Island of the Sun, is a colorful cornucopia of national traditions and customs, of historical features and legends. This present example is similar to another we had in stock years ago, except this example was issued folded for travelers and lacks a large title at the bottom of the map.

Among the historical references featured is the fabulous Colossus, one of the wonders of the ancient world. Also featured are the Knights Templar and their palace, and St. George, whose cross the Templars carried, slaying the dragon. A number of groups of Greeks on the island are occupied in iconic Greek activities from dancing to performing religious rites.

The island is shown with lush vegetation including forested areas, orchards and wildlife. While Rhodes is 234 nautical miles from Greece, it is a mere 25 nautical miles from the coast of Turkey, and thus Anatolian civilizations have had significant impact on the island, and are also represented in a number of places both on the island and in the upper left and lower right quadrants of the poster, which are fancifully illustrated with scenes common to both Greece and Turkey.

Roads, forts and light houses are also depicted. Tourists are seen making their way to the island in small boats, while larger seagoing vessels of various kinds ply the waters.

Egon Huber, an Austrian potter and artist who worked for the ceramics company Rodi, moved to Rhodes in 1931 and promptly fell in love with the island. This marvelous pictorial map depicts much of what Huber found to love on the legendary island, which has been inhabited from time immemorial. Huber’s map reveals the depth of his knowledge of the island and its history.

Condition: This vintage pictorial traveler's map is in A condition, issued folded, now mostly flat with no significant tears or holes. This map can be linen-backed upon buyer's request for added flattening and stability.
