This pictorial map of “Andean America,” or the countries bordering the Andes Mountains, is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography.

The map shows the entire continent of South America, and includes details for all South American countries except for Brazil. The map highlights important cities of the continent like Santiago, Lima, and Bogota. Around the print are vignettes of historical scenes and figures. On the right side of the print is an illustration titled “Submission of the Incas,” which shows an Incan leader laying down his shield in surrender to the Spaniards. Above this is a portrait of Francisco Pizarro, the infamous conquistador who mined the area for silver deposits. Also pictured are stilted houses above water, llamas, Incan statues, and portraits of Amerigo Vespucci and Vasco Núñez de Balboa.

The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.

Condition: Map is in A condition with full margins and bright colors.
