This map of Szczecin or Stettin, Poland, by Matthäus Merian, provides a bird’s eye view of a siege of the city. The besiegers are depicted encamped to the right of centre of the map. Countless tents form a long line replete with an arsenal of cannons.The city is shown to be well fortified with walls and watch towers on the inland side.
Agricultural areas are shown near the city, with the Oder River running across the length of the map. Throughout the Thirty Years’ War the populace of Stettin refused to accept German imperia rule, siding instead with Sweden.
The territory’s sovereignty was decided in the Treat of Stettin in 1653 which cut the city off from its main trading area. It was besieged many times, finally shattering the city’s economy. In 1654 the city’s last Pomeranian duke was buried in the Ducal Castle.
Szczecin/Stettin is now the capital and largest city of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship in northwestern Poland. Located near the Baltic Sea and the German border, it is a major seaport and Poland’s seventh-largest city.
