By: James Imray

Date: 1886 (Published) London

Dimensions: 41 x 48.5 inches (104.1 x 123.2 cm)

This Imray blue back is a superb, definitive nautical chart/maritime map of Japan and the western coast of Asia going as far north as Russian Tartary and most of Yezo (Hokkaido) Japan, and as far south as the Korean Strait. The coastal areas of the large main islands of Japan, apart from the northernmost portion of Hokkaido, are rendered in great detail, while there is limited inland detail aside from some topographical details along the eastern edge of Asia. The coastal topography details myriad ports and harbors, shoals and other undersea dangers, and countless depth soundings shown in fathoms. A few inland elevations are indicated in feet.

The map includes eight insets of harbors and bays such as Tokyo, Yokohama, etc. Japan’s southern islands are shown in some detail. Though this map was published toward the end of the firm’s long rule of the industry, it obviously was still highly regarded and in use as one of the most authoritative charts available, and presents with a number of hand-drawn navigational routes (manuscript sailing markers added in pencil), a number of which are dated 1900. Important regions and navigational sites have been highlighted in yellow with many major cities marked in red.

Condition: This blue black chart is in B+ condition. One small chip at bottom edge.
