1744 Carte Particuliere Des Environs D'Ostende Neuport Furnes et Autres
DESCRIPTION
This is a seldom seen map of the coast of Belgium by one of the most prolific Belgian publishers of the 18th century, Eugène-Henri Fricx (1644-1740 c.). The map features the towns of Ostendi, Nieuport, and Furnes as well as Fort Blackenbergh with many smaller villages and estates noted and connected via roads. The nautical portion of the map features depth soundings with banks illustrated and many sailing vessels depicted along the coast. Near top center is an elaborate and unusual compass rose featuring windheads in billowing clouds with rays of sunlight beaming from their head and mouths.
