This is a superb example of Pieter Goos's nautical chart of the Atlantic and Mediterranean detailing coastal ports and cities of west Africa, the Canary Islands, Europe, Western Russia, Greenland, Iceland and part of Spitzbergen. The map was based upon the earlier works of Blaeu and Anthonie Jacobsz.
The map is oriented to the west with north at the right and is richly embellished with rhumb lines, compass roses, coats of arms, sailing ships and a viscous sea monster. A distance scale in Dutch, Spanish, French and English miles as well as a decorative title cartouche featuring a dutch map maker ornament the lower portion of the map.
This example offers ample margins on all sides, a strong impression on clean paper, and original color that is apparent with oxidization of the green pigment on the verso.
Condition: This map is in A condition with original color and a small centerfold separation in the top that just enters the image by 1 cm.
