Dimensions: 11.75 x 17.5 (29.85 x 44.5 cm)

Published just over a decade before the start of the Revolutionary War, this Janvier map of North America provides a fascinating perspective of the continent and the lack of information regarding its west coast.  North of Albion, which had been claimed by Francis Drake in the sixteenth century, is a large mythical body of water called in French ‘the Sea or Bay of the West’. This feature has tentative borders which extend around it and on north up the coast to what would become Alaska.

The map features a number of interesting details such as Russian discoveries in NW America and the Tchirickow/De L’Isle coastline above the words Mer Du Sud which has no connection to the mainland. The headwaters of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers are shown, and a few early French forts are depicted. A decorative title cartouche embellishes the lower left quadrant.

Condition: This map is in A condition on presenting a clean impression heavy paper with original outline color and full margins on all sides.
