A rare wall map of Palestine and Syria otherwise known as the Holy Land by a professor of Miami University of Ohio, designed and published for religions educational institutions. Other examples of this map was posses dates of 1855, 1868, 1875, and 1883. OCLC records just two institution examples, both of which are dated 1875.
The map features the 14 tribes of Israel that are listed in the Book of Ezekiel, with the extent of their geographic region indicated by roman numerals and coloring. Place names both modern and biblical are noted throughout, some with population numbers and other with reference to the Book of Genesis. Roman roads as well as Haj roads to Mecca are delineated through variable terrain as well as lands described as fertile and fine pasture land. Two explanation tables further aide in examining the map. Additionally, two cross sectional profiles of the Dead Sea and its environs are provided, as well as an inset map of Jerusalem, and a Panoramic view of the city from the Mount of Olives.
Henry Stafford Osborn, educator, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 17 August, 1823. He was graduated at the University of Pennsylvania in 1841, and at the New York union theological seminary in 1846. He also studied at Bonn, Germany, an(1 at the Polytechnic institution of London. He was pastor of the Pres. Davies's church at Hanover, and at Liberty, Virginia, between 1846 and 1858, and at Belvidere, New Jersey, from 1859 till 1866. Before the civil war he had held the chair of natural science in Roanoke college, Virginia, and in 1866 he accepted a professorship in Lafayette college.
He left it in 1870, and in 1871 became professor in Miami university, Ohio, where he remained until that institution was closed in 1873. He spent much time visiting and making surveys of famous localities in Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and the islands of the Mediterranean. He has also prepared many of the maps of Bible lands that are now used in the United States and at various mission stations and other places abroad. He received the degree of LL.D. from Lafayette in 1865.

Condition: Map is in B condition with areas of damp staining, common among wall maps and a horizontal break in the paper. This break and any other structural imperfections have been professionally reinforced with fresh linen-backing on the verso. The original wood rollers are securely mounted to the map.
