Created by Klengston “Kleng” Rude and published by Kleng Rude Studios in Long Beach, California, in 1962, this Pano-View Map of California and Nevada presents the two states in exaggerated three dimensional relief. Mountains, deserts, valleys, and coastlines provide the backdrop for an extraordinary amount of detail, with highways and railroads connecting cities, parks, ski areas, military installations, mines, ranches, farms, vineyards, and recreational destinations. Ships and airplanes crowd the California coast, while Nevada is populated with prospectors, cattle, mining camps, desert scenery, and the growing resort city of Las Vegas.
Rude mixes geography with hundreds of small illustrations that reward close inspection. Yosemite, Death Valley, Lake Tahoe, Mount Whitney, the California missions, Hoover Dam, the Las Vegas Strip, and numerous state and national parks appear alongside local industries, wildlife, sporting activities, and roadside attractions. California's agricultural abundance is particularly prominent, with citrus, grapes, cotton, livestock, and other products illustrated throughout the Central Valley and southern part of the state.
A History of the Far West
The decorative border provides a condensed history of California and Nevada through a series of illustrated scenes. Along the bottom, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, Sir Francis Drake, Junípero Serra, John Sutter, and John C. Frémont represent exploration, Spanish settlement, the missions, the Gold Rush, and American expansion. The upper border continues the story into Nevada, depicting early Spanish exploration, Peter Skene Ogden, Mormon settlers, the discovery of the Comstock Lode, and Abraham Lincoln alongside Nevada's admission to the Union in 1864. State flags, birds, flowers, and prominent “Golden State” and “Silver State” emblems complete the elaborate design.
Published during a period of tremendous growth in the West, the map captures California and Nevada as both historic frontier and modern vacation destination. Freeways, commercial aviation, expanding cities, Las Vegas resorts, and recreational travel coexist with prospectors, ranchers, missions, wagon trains, and scenes of the Old West.
