By: Johnson and Ward
Date: 1861 (published) New York
Dimensions: 16.5 x 25 inches (42 x 63.5 cm)
This is an original antique map of the world on Mercator's Projection, published by Johnson and Ward out of New York in 1861. The map features numerous tracks of routes taken by famous explorers in centuries past as well as contemporary shipping routes and the first trans-Atlantic cable from Ireland to Newfoundland.
The interior of Africa remains largely unexplored which earned it the nickname "the dark continent." The coastline of Antarctica is also incomplete in many areas. In the north however is a clear passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean which is most commonly referred to as the Northwest Passage. Geo-political borders are representative of the mid-19th century.
Condition: This map is in B condition with a wormhole in the bottom center portion of the map that has been reinforced on the verso using the same paper.
