1947 State of Washington Historical Map
DESCRIPTION
This pictorial map was done for the Washington State Historical Society, and features many of the events and places of importance in the history of the state.
The key located around most of three edges of the map lists 95 places of importance including a brief historical description of each, all of which are numbered on the map, and adds the note that ‘Limited space prevents inclusion of many more locations of historical importance’. Using the state as a backdrop, Moody illustrates the events considered most important or noteworthy. Many of these include scenes involving indigenous peoples and their unfortunate encounters with trappers and settlers who were increasingly encroaching on their ancestral territories.
Also pictured are scenes of panning for gold, attempts at making peace, surveyors, wagon trains, etc. Most of the scenes depict events dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. The legend shows Military Road, Indian roads, and roads leading to and from various forts. The Oregon Trail, Naches Pass trail and the Lewis and Clark Trail are also pictured as well as Mountains, rivers, bays and lakes mountains, rivers, bays and lakes.
