This colored lithograph depicts the soils of the Salt Lake City region in Utah as they were determined and described in a survey conducted by Frank Gardner and John Stewart. The survey was completed and the map printed within three years of Utah having been granted statehood.

The map is highly detailed with the city of Salt Lake, and the nearby region delineated with color coded legends on either side of the image. This survey was undertaken by the Utah Agriculture Experimental Station under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  It offers a unique view of the local area, with the scientific names for soils depicted by colors and abbreviations. Lakes near the city are depicted, existing railroads of the day are included, as are canals used for irrigation.

Condition: This original color linen-backed map is in A condition.
