This Tirion work consists of three fascinating and highly detailed maps, one a representation of 18th century New Orleans, and the other two depicting the Mississippi River and the many courses by which it enters the Gulf of Mexico as it passes through its delta and wetlands. All three maps are oriented north.
The city itself is laid out in a perfect rectangular grid, resembling an ancient Roman city plan, highly organized with all streets named and an alphabetical key to identify important sites throughout the city, including churches, businesses, and government buildings.
The map of the river in the upper right starts in territory to the northwest of the city and follows the river past New Orleans all the way to the various places in which it enters the Gulf of Mexico. The map in the lower right focuses on the easternmost estuary. Both of these maps depict the process of sedimentation taking place at the delta.
