Date: 1736 (Published) Nuremberg

Dimensions: 18.25 x 21.75 inches (46.4 x 55.25 cm)

This remarkable map of Africa was first published in 1715 by Johann Homann, founder of the famous Nuremberg map publishing house.

This revision was done later by Johann Mathias Haas, who augmented the original to include important cartographic developments as had been noted by Guillaume de l’Isle and Jean Baptiste d’Anville. The revision is distinguished by the absence of many fictitious and legendary features which earlier had been featured in maps of Africa. Thus, this version of the map is a fairly accurate representation of the continent, focusing on coastal areas which were well known and documented while leaving much of the interior blank or marked Terra Incognita.

Egypt, Nubia and Abyssinia are clearly separate territories, Lake Nyasa is depicted labeled as Lac Marawi, and Dutch settlements at the Cape are denoted, with ‘Hotentotae’ written at the tip of the continent. The map is embellished with a beautiful cartouche featuring peoples indigenous to Africa and Europeans, and much flora and fauna native to Africa.

Condition: This map is in B+ condition. Coloring is a combination of original and modern. A centerfold separation and a short tear at the bottom have been repaired with archival material on the verso. Two tiny worm holes in the image and some general soiling.
