1800 An Accurate Map of Hindostan or India from the best Authorities
By: Joseph T. Scott
Date: 1800 (Published) Philadelphia
Dimensions: 15 x 15.5 inches (38.1 x 39.4 cm)
This map was part of the first general atlas to have been published in the newly formed United States of America. As noted in an engraved line above the border, the map was ‘engraved for Carey’s edition of Guthrie’s Geography improved’.
The map depicts India, Tibet, Ceylon and Siam (now Thailand). It is highly detailed, including all river systems, mountain ranges and forested areas of the day. Coastal areas are well defined, and the map differs little from modern map regarding its shorelines. The islands of the Bay of Bengal are featured, as are the Laccadive and Maldive island groups in the Indian Ocean.
Condition: This map is in B condition with uneven toning and some soiling. A fold separation has been repaired with archival material on the verso.
