Dimensions: 12.75 x 25 inches (32.4 x 63.5 cm)
This striking large format map of the Island of Jamaica is by James Wyld, Geographer to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
The map is highly detailed with in depth depiction of topographical features, cities and settlements, ports and river systems. A note in the lower center states the following. “Discovered by Columbus May 3rd 1494, named after St. Jago and from the Indian name Xaymaca. Woody and well waterd. Silver, Lead, Copper and Antimony are found in the Liguana Mountains. Conquered by England from Spain 1655.” A legend in the lower right corner contains information concerning towns, parishes and areas in acres.
The map is evidence of the high standards of any kind of work ordered by Victoria and Albert, and perhaps in this case especially Albert, who had a keen interest in geography and maps. The map is on heavy paper of high quality. The image, with original color, is commanding and its border a well-chosen compliment.
Condition: This map is in A condition. A repair has been made with archival materials on the right edge.
