1989 San Francisco Oz by the Bay
By: Rob Zell Breier
Date: 1989 (Published)
Dimensions: 23.75 x 36.6 inches (60.33 x 93 cm)
This scarce lively pictorial vintage map of San Francisco features the city as ‘Oz by the Bay’, and its four corners feature vignettes of four principal characters of the novel including the Tin Man, the Lion, the Scarecrow, and a witch who appears to be of the ‘good’ variety.
Rather than being a guide for getting about the city, the map is more of a group of myriad colorful advertisements focusing on private businesses which were thriving at the time. In addition, a number of well-known landmarks are depicted. The resulting work is something of a time capsule rendered in whimsical style.
From iconic restaurants featuring cuisines from around the world, to Haight-Ashbury and Symphony Hall; from Maud’s bar, which claims to be the oldest bar in the world for women, to numerous places and businesses for people seeking company of a specific sexual orientation, the map’s illustrations and landmarks reflect a relaxed and tolerant perspective regarding lifestyle.
Condition: This vintage pictorial map is in B condition with some edge tears.
