This light-hearted pictorial map depicts Sun Valley, Idaho and its environs, highlighting trails and areas which would be of interest to anyone who loves the out of doors. It was produced as part of a campaign undertaken by Union Pacific Railroad in 1936 to boost travel to the scenic area which had been developed by UPR.
The country’s first western ski resort, Sun Valley was often referred to as the ‘St. Moritz of America’. William Willmarth and his brother Kenneth created many of the posters used to publicize Sun Valley, but the works on which they collaborated were usually signed ‘The Willmarths’, while this poster is signed simply ‘Willmarth’, as William often signed works of his own devise.
While much of the initial UPR campaign was focused on winter sports, the project also hoped to attract visitors to the area during the remaining three seasons. Thus the map is exceptionally well-informed concerning topography, with hills, ridges and mountains of the area all depicted and named. Creeks, rivers and lakes are traced and in position, and all facilities are represented and named, including the golf course, cabins, lodges, etc.
The lower right quadrant is occupied by a distance legend which also contains information regarding various destinations of interest such as lakes, beaver dams and mines, and the distance to them.
This is an interesting and fun pictorial map for youngsters of all ages which will certainly evoke fond memories for anyone who has visited the resort.
Condition: This scarce vintage pictorial map is in well-preserved A condition.
