Dimensions: 15.75 x 21 inches (40 x 53.3 cm)

This is a colorful and decorative map of France, initially published by John Speed in 1626. This example is thought to date to 1676, following retouching of the original plate. In typical Speed tradition, the side panels depict figures in native costumes while in a row of vignettes across the top are depicted the largest and most important cities of France, including Paris, Calais, Bordeaux and Poitiers among others. English language text on the verso describes both the history of France and the country as it appeared at the beginning of the 17th century, according to a decidedly Anglo-centric point of view.

Condition: This hand colored map is in C+ condition. The centerfold and edges of the map have been repaired and reinforced with archival material on the verso. Some discoloration and staining at the centerfold.
