As titled, this is a hysterical map of Yellowstone National Park done in a pictorial style with a myriad of "play-on-word" images for geographical features and popular tourist sites throughout the park. The map, like the park is a perfect square centered on Yellowstone Lake in the northwest corner of Wyoming with portions of Idaho and Montana included within its west and north borders. The main roads through the park are delineated in red and a mileage chart (identifying this map as the third and final state) appears in the lower left.
The Lindgren Brothers produced a series of these pictorial map during the Great Depression of the 1930s and The New Deal enacted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. As part of The New Deal, annual appropriations for the national parks and monuments increased from just under $11 million in 1933 to nearly $27 million in 1939. This increase in spending for National Parks and Monuments during a time of such economic struggle was not popular among many Americans. The Lindgren Brother series of National Park maps was clearly an effort bring about a joyous revelry towards the natural treasures of the United States and inspire Americans to hold them in high regard and one day, visit them for themselves.
