1935 A Slightly Cockeyed Map of That Slightly Cockeyed Community Hollywood Executed by That Slightly Cockeyed Topographer
By: John Groth
Date: 1935 (published)
Dimensions: 13 x 18.5 inches (33 x 47 cm)
This charming pictorial map of Hollywood and the surrounding areas focuses on the entertainment industry, including big movie studios, restaurants, hotels, and clubs. Notable places of interest found within the map include MGM, Columbia Pictures, Universal Studios, Chaplin Studio, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, NBC, the Bel Air Bach Club, the Roosevelt Hotel, Hollywood Bowl, Clover Club, and Hollywood Bowl to name a few.
Key street names are given, bounded by Venice Boulevard in the south and Vermont Avenue in the west. The map shows an interesting contrast between glamorous movie stars and hard-working immigrants, such as the Chinese laborers raking at bottom center and a Mexican with a donkey at bottom right.
Created by John Groth, the map features his unique "speed line" style. Groth, a native Chicagoan and prominent artist, is best known for his paintings and illustrations of sports and war. He was an Art Director for Esquire magazine, and later served as an artist-correspondent during both the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Condition: This vintage map is in excellent condition with some small holes (reinforced on the verso) where once stapled in its original publication.
