1875 City of Des Moines from South Park Hill
By: Alfred T. Andreas
Date: 1875 (published) Chicago
Dimensions: 12.75 x 16 inches (32 x 40.5 cm)
A splendid depiction of Des Moines, Iowa to promote Hawkeye Insurance Company. The print appeared in the 1875 publication of "The Illustrated Historical Atlas of the State of Iowa," to which Hawkeye Insurance was a primary sponsor.
The print includes a portrait of E.J. Ingersoll Esq. the President of Hawkeye Insurance as well as an inset view of their building with horse drawn carriages out front. As stated in the title, the view comes from South Hill just behind the confluence of the Raccoon and Des Moines River. It shows an active city with nine trains moving about streets filled with stage coaches and cable cars. At left-center, an artist (possibly Alfred Andreas) sketches the same remarkable view of Des Moines we enjoy in this print.
Condition: This print is in A condition with some loss to the margins and tears where the print was originally bound into the atlas.
