Charte von Nord America nach den neuesten Bestimmungren und Entdeckungen von C.G. Reichard.

By: Christian Gottlieb Reichard

Date: 1804 (dated) Weimar

Dimensions: 20.4 x 23.2 inches (51.8 x 58.9 cm)

This scarce German map of North America was created just after the Louisiana Purchase but before completion of the Lewis and Clark expeditions. The map is highly detailed in places, and virtually empty in others. The map extends from Baffin Bay to Panama and northern South America, including the West Indies.

The map details political divisions for Mexico, the United States, the West Indies, French Louisiana, and British possessions in North America. It depicts many of the lands of indigenous peoples, major settlements, and roads connecting them. Ports, settlements and cities are all denoted. Relief is shown by hachures. River systems are delineated. Much of the southwest and northwest of the USA is labeled ‘Quivira’. These regions are largely uncharted, as are significant portions of Canada.

The map includes many explanatory notes, a distance legend, and a colour key regarding the colonial possessions of England, Spain, France, Germany, Holland, Denmark and Sweden.

Condition: This map is in B condition due to having been trimmed just inside the neat line on the left side, with slight loss of imagery that extends into the border. The remainder of the map is in very good condition.
