1923 Automobile Road from Los Angeles to San Francisco via Ridge Route and Inland Route

This is a set of five automobile card maps detailing the ridge and inland route from Los Angeles to San Francisco. While a card #3 appears to be missing, the entire route from L.A. to S.F. is complete as it runs through California's Central Valley by way of Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto, Stockton, and Oakland.
Mileage is provided in small circles adjacent to the auto trail with topographic detail, railroads, and smaller towns notes throughout. Several cards feature official hotels and garages that were contracted with the Automobile Club of Southern California. At the bottom of each card is an interesting quote that is still quite pertinent today reads "HELP PREVENT FIRES" - IT PAYS.
These cards were essentially the precursor to road maps produced by oil companies and AAA. They are an important, early piece of automotive and travel history.
The Automobile Club of Southern California was founded on December 13, 1900, in Los Angeles as one of the nation's first motor clubs dedicated to improving roads, proposing traffic laws, and improvement of overall driving conditions. Today, it is the single largest member of the AAA federation, with almost 8 million members.
