1720 Description Du Pèlerinage Des Turcs A La Mecque Et A Medine, Ou Ils Vont Du Caire...
Map Maker: Henri Abraham Chatelain
Date: 1720 (Published) Amsterdam
Dimensions: 15 x 17.25 inches (38.1 cm x 43.82 cm)
This is an authentic antique print created by Henri Abraham Chatelain, published in 1720 as part of his seven-volume work “Atlas Historique”. Here Chatelain depicts a pilgrimage whose participants travel on camels, on foot, and on horseback. Such pilgrimages take place today but by rather more modern means of transport. This scene of Turkish peoples en route from the gates of Cairo to visit their holy sites in Mecca and Medina is in a beautifully detailed vignette which realistically renders the various groups making up the pilgrimage, including janissaries, falconers, drummers, religious leaders, etc. Remaining vignettes depict flora and fauna of the region, all of which are described by accompanying text.
Condition: This print is in B condition with light toning around the edges and along the center fold. There was a center fold separation in the lower margin that has been repaired on the verso. Print exhibits a strong impression, with full margins.
