Date: 1720 (Published) Amsterdam

Dimensions: 15 x 19.25 inches (38 cm x 48.9 cm)

This boldly engraved authentic antique folio page from Chatelain's Atlas Historique shows scenes from the Antilles in the early decades of the eighteenth century.

The upper left and right quadrants feature European taskmasters lording it over indigenous peoples and animals alike. The upper center panel featuring a local man and woman is reminiscent of an old master rendering of Adam and Eve in The Garden.

European-style housing is pictured in the background of two scenes in the lower left and right quadrants which show the process by which sugar and indigo are produced. Other engravings feature local flora and fauna, including a panel depicting exotic-looking sea creatures.

Condition: This map is in B condition. There is toning of the borders and a centerfold separation which has been repaired with archival material on the verso.
