Dimensions: 18.5 x 19.5 (47 cm x 50 cm)
This large hand-colored,double-page copper engraved map by Homanianos Heredes covers the northern half of South America from just above Panama to Paraguay. The Isthmus of Panama and neighboring territories to the west and north are at the upper left corner. Farther south the map beautifully describes the Amazon Valley, its countless tributaries and confluences, naming the rivers and showing the configuration of each in fine detail. The west coast of South America is also described in remarkable detail, and place names and annotations of various sorts, plus major cities are indicated.
The title cartouche features soldiers of classical antiquity replete with armor and weapons. The sun shines over them all and a pot of gold coins graces a pedestal in the lower center, perhaps an allusion to the legendary El Dorado.
Condition: This map is in B+ condition. It is printed on good, heavy paper. There is light soiling around the edges of the borders. Some tears have been repaired with archival material on the verso.
