This magnificent hand colored authentic antique map of the southern half of South America by Homanianos Heredes compliments a map of the northern half by the same cartographer. The other enormous river system of South America, the Rio de la Plata and its tributaries and confluences, along with a number of large lakes in the region are all detailed. Capes, bays and ports along both edges of the continent are named.
An inset map in the lower right quadrant with the compass rose oriented south, features the city of Santiago as it was in the early 18th century. The Rio Mapocho shows us that much of the city lies to the south of the river. The legend in the small map contains a list of architectural monuments of the day.
The straits of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego are beautifully rendered at the bottom of tip of the continent. By the time these maps were made, South America had been relatively thoroughly explored, and thus cartographers were able to impart much knowledge to patrons, real explorers and armchair explorers concerning the southern half of the New World.
The splendid title cartouche features local flora, fauna and creatures from the sea, some industrious locals engaged in an activity of some sort, some Indian heads replete with brightly colored feathers, and a volcano which appears to be about to erupt.
Condition: This map is in B+ condition. It is printed on good, heavy paper. There is light soiling around the borders, and the top border is a bit narrow due to the placement of the engraving on the sheet. There is a small rust hole in the ocean to the west of Chili.
