This unusually lovely miniature map by Pieter van der Aa is another of his series featuring different locales in the New World. This hand-colored work features a compass rose orienting the map to the east. North is located to the left, providing a horizontal view of the Mississippi and its tributaries, and covers teritories from Lake Michigan and the northern reaches of the Mississippi in the north to the Gulf of Mexico in the south.

As indicated in the lovely title cartouche, this copperplate map is based on the 1673 expedition of Father Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit missionary, and Louis Joliet, a fur trader, who set off to explore the region in two bark canoes accompanied by a number of Native Americans.

Their goal was to explore the unsettled territory in North America from the area of the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico for the colonial power of France. The journey started with their embarking with several men up the Mississippi River. They arrived in present-day Arkansas in June of 1673 and were (as far as was known) the first Europeans to come into contact with the Indians of east Arkansas since Hernando de Soto's expedition in the 1540's.

The map documents the results of their expedition.

Condition: This map is in A condition with even toning and slight foxing with some small rust spots on the verso.
