1815 West India Islands – Porto Rico and Virgin Isles / Haiti, Hispanola or St. Dominigo
By: John Thompson
Date: 1815 (dated) Edinburgh
Dimensions: 21 x 24 inches (53 x 61 cm)
This is an example of one of the finer early 19th century maps of the islands of present day Puerto Rico, U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Divided into two sections, the map depicts towns, cities, forts, copper mines, rivers and bays.
The map was published as part of John Thompson’s “A New General Atlas,” in 1817 out of Edinburgh, Scotland. The atlas acted as a continuation of Pinkerton’s Modern Atlas of 1815 as the resemblance between the two in quite noticeable. Thompson’s atlas adds about twenty maps not included in that of Pinkerton. Nearly half of these extra maps focus on the West India Islands.
Condition: The map is in A condition with bright color over a strong impression. The paper is strong and clean without any holes and a minor marginal tear that has been reinforced on the verso.
