This authentic antique hand-colored map by Jan Jansson depicts a portion of the Ottoman Empire of the mid 16th century including Thessaloniki, Macedonia, and areas of adjoining territories such as the northern edge of Achaiae. The map is embellished with fine seagoing craft of different kinds flying a variety of flags. A small but beguiling sea monster bobs in the Aegean. Geographical and topographical features are delineated as are territorial borders.
The colorful title cartouche in the upper left quadrant is surrounded by Ottoman figures in a variety of headdresses indicating their rank, while the cartouche surrounding the scale in the upper right quadrant is surrounded by putti and includes a wide variety of vegetables, perhaps indicating the agricultural richness of the region.
There is Latin text on the verso.
Condition: This map is in B condition with full margins and slight toning on the margins. Archival tape has been used on the centerfold on the verso.
