1707 T Amerikaans Gewest van Florida Door Ferdinand de Soto
By: Pieter van der Aa
Date: 1707 (Published) Leiden
Dimensions: 6 x 9 inches (15.24 cm x 22.9 cm)
This authentic antique map by Pieter van der AA is based on Sanson’s map of 1657 and covers the region from Texas to Chesapeake Bay, with many place names noted. To the east of the Appalachians are the British colonies of Carolina and Virginia, with the remainder of the map called Florida. Lack Erie is shown far to the south of its actual location, and the river systems are spuriously rendered. An imaginative north-south mountain range stretches through the central plains. Texas is labeled Terlichichimechi and the Florida Peninsula is call Tegesta Prov.
A lovely decorative cartouche portrays Ferdinand de Soto discussing his expedition with a group of Native Americans. The cartouche itself is a work of art in miniature.
Condition: This map is in A condition. The impression is bold and clear.
