By: Pieter van der Aa
Date: 1707 (Published) Leiden
Dimensions: 6.5 x 9 inches (16.5 cm x 22.9 cm)
Description: This intriguing miniature map is a study in the perfection of cartographers' skills of the early 18th century. A small hand-colored authentic antique map, it is an attractive rendering of territories on three sides of the Atlantic. By Pieter van der Aa, the title describes the map as the 'Northern Part of Virginia", but in fact far more territory is described in its borders.
Based on reports by Gosnold and Pring concerning exploration of what is now northeastern America and southeastern Canada, the map also shows Greenland, Iceland, the British Isles, western Europe including the coasts of Spain and France, the western end of the Mediterranean, and the northwestern corner of Africa. Sea routes to the New World are delineated.
A lovely title cartouche is accompanied by an illustration of indigenous peoples meeting Europeans whose frigate is anchored some distance from the shore. Dinghies are transporting the sailors to dry land.
