1968 San Francisco
DESCRIPTION
This is an original vintage travel poster by Colorado Springs-based Looart Press, produced in the late 1960s.
The print shows a view of the Golden Gate Bridge on a foggy day, as the lights of the bridge illuminate the sky. The traffic crossing the bridge is represented as a long exposure, cars’ headlights blurring into streaks of orange and white. Behind the massive tower in the foreground, the sky is a misty blue-gray, obscuring the landscape around the bridge. Behind the tower at the top of the print is the title text, reading simply “San Francisco.”
With beautiful coloring and fine composition, this vintage print of San Francisco is a sterling example of a 1960s travel poster.
Looart was founded in 1947 by Orin Loo out of the family garage, whom had early success creating greeting cards. Orin's wife Miriam then started a company called Current that sold “Post-A-Notes” in bulk to local churches advertising them as a fundraising item. In the 1960s Orin and Miriam’s sons, Dusty and Gary merged the two companies to for the Looart Press which would produce remarkable travel posters and prints among other items until the business sold in 1987 for $115 million.
