This colorful depiction of Tennessee shows the geographic diversity. From the Appalachian Range, on the eastern side, with a multitude of valleys running north and south, and the Mississippi River bordering the Western region, this state is filled with deposits of zinc, clay, phosphate, marble, coal and copper. The cities of Knoxville and Chattanooga, on the Tennessee River, became important manufacturing centers for hardwood lumber products and textiles.
