Date: 1885 (circa)

Dimensions: 12 x 20.5 inches (30.5cm x 51.4 cm)

This striking map of the Holy Land by Henry Tunison is oriented east, and shows the topography of this long-disputed region of the world in great detail. It was published circa 1885. It is distinctive because Tunison employed Old-World printing techniques while his competitors were printing low quality atlases using printed color. Though this map is black and white, Tunison often produced maps with expert, vivid hand coloring.

Here we find depicted the entire area of the Holy Land, including its cities, villages and small settlements, bodies of water and rivers. Ports and coves line the seaboard, including deltas of great rivers and small streams as they enter the Mediterranean. The Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee are depicted.

On the verso is one map of the journeys of St. Paul, and below it a map of the city of Jerusalem as it appeared in the late nineteenth century.

Condition: This print is in A condition with very light toning.
