This is an authentic antique map of the Territory of Utah by the General Land Office of the United States. The map was created for the Department of the Interior on October 2 1866.

This is arguably the most accurate and detailed early maps of the Utah Territory. Color coded by counties many of which stretch across the state this map provides a clear depiction of both population distribution and geographical ignorance within the territory. Much of the southern portion of the state is virtually void of any geographic detail except for the path of a few rivers and two roads that stretch to the southwest corner of the territory. A reference key is given to note Indian reservations gold iron and lead mines that can be found throughout the map.

General Land Office maps are an essential part of early cartographic representation for many states in the U.S. west of the Mississippi. There were not many published as compared to the maps found in the Mitchell and Johnson and Colton atlases circulating at the time and therefore are becoming more and more difficult to find. A great piece for any collector of Utah or western state maps.

Condition: Map is in A condition with original color with an overall clean appearance save for some light toning along horizontal fold. Minor edge tears are apparent that do not enter the image
