This is an authentic antique map of North and South Carolina by Alvin Johnson. The map was published out of New York by Johnson & Ward in 1862.
This map spans from Georgia to Virginia with a focus on the states of North and South Carolina, which have been color coded by county. An elaborate web of railways and roads connects the south which at the time was in the grips of the American Civil War. Two engraved views within the map show Table Mountain and Chimney Rock along the French Broad River. At lower right, an insert of the plan of Charleston includes a smaller insert of Fort Sumter with labels for officer’s quarters, barracks, furnaces for heating shot, powder magazines, the lighthouse and boat landing.
Condition: Map is in B+ condition, with no marginal tears, but some light browning along the centerfold and in the margins.
