1856 Iowa
DESCRIPTION
This is an original antique map of Iowa, published by Joseph H. Colton out of New York in 1856. The map is color coded by county with townships also identified and shows railroads, common roads, rivers, canals, lakes, forts, large towns and villages of the mid-19th century. Some noteworthy towns found within the map include Des Moines, Iowa City, Sioux City, Council Bluffs, DuBuque, and Cedar Falls to name a few.
The edge of the frontier is noticeable in the lack of American civilization and cartographic detail of the state's northwestern counties. At this point in history, much of the population still remained along major rivers and/or well used wagon routes.
