1845 Amerique du Nord
By: Auguste Henri Dufour
Date: 1845 (dated) Paris
Dimensions: 36 x 25 inches (91.5 x 61 cm)
This is an authentic antique map of Central and North America by Auguste Henri Dufour. The map was produced in Paris, 1845.
This large 21 section case map of North America provides an impressive amount of detail in comparison to other large continental maps of the era. State and territory boundaries are delineated as well as towns, forts, roads, Native American tribes, railroads, rivers, topography, and sea lanes. The map was issued the same year of the annexation of the state of Texas to the United States of America. The new state is shown with a rather squashed appearance and a complete absence of a panhandle.
The United States extend as far west as Texas, Missouri, and Arkansas. Mexico controls all of present-day American Southwest and California. The central and Northwestern portions of present day United States is divided up into Native American districts that include the Ozark, Osages, Mandan, Sioux, Huron, and Oregon. In the Pacific Northwest, U.S. Claims are shown to extend well in to present-day British Columbia. Russian America (Alaska) almost completely void of detail in the top-left portion of the map, as well as in an insert at the lower left detailing the Aleutian Islands.
This is a great piece for any North American collection as a highly detailed, large scale map done before the Fremont Expeditions and after Lewis and Clark.
Condition: Map is in A condition with old color, backed on original linen. Some paper toning is apparent evenly through the map, but the overall image is strong.
