By: Jean Alexandre Buchon
Date: 1825 (published) Paris
Dimensions: 19 x 24 inches (48.25 x 60.95 cm)
This is an authentic antique map of the Arkansas Territory and Great Plains of the United Sates by Jean Alexandre Buchon. The map is from the French edition of Carey & Lea's American Atlas and was published in Paris in the year 1825.
Much of the information used in the making of this map comes from Major Stephen H. Long's exploratory expeditions though the Great Plains of America to the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains. The routes of his expeditions followed closely with that of Lewis & Clark and are delineated throughout the map.
This map was a giant step forward in the process of mapping the central states, especially with regard to the vast system of rivers and streams the spread across present day, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and the Dakotas. Of course at the time this map was published, much area mapped was regarded as Indian Territory. Numerous Indian Villages are noted throughout the map as well as military forts and several early towns and settlements.
Condition: Map is in A condition, with full margins, bright color, and a nice impression of heavy paper.
