1794 America divided into North and South with their Several Subdivisions and their Newest Discoveries
Date: 1794 (dated) London
Dimensions: 19.5 x 21 inches (49.5 x 53.4 cm)
This is an authentic antique map of the Western Hemisphere. The map was published by Laurie & Whittle out of London in 1794.
This precise map of the Americas displays the land color coded by national control. America is shown in green to extend from the eastern seaboard to the Mississippi. The Spanish are shown to control much of both continents from Florida, west to Mexico, and all the way south to Terra del Fuego. Texas, being under Spanish control is within the region of New Mexico.
Of course when we talk about European powers controlling the totality of the Americas as indicated by this map and many others of its time, it’s all theoretical. During the late 18th century, there were millions of Native Americans on both sides of the equator that would laugh at the notion of their world being in total “European control.”
This map also includes several interesting cartographic errors and predictions with regard to the mapping of the American Northwest. For example, two proposed delineations for the "River of the West" extend from the Pacific Coast to the northern plains.
Condition: Map is in B+ condition, with two minor centerfold separations at either end of the map that have been repaired on the verso. The map displays, wide margins, original coloring, and a strong impression on thick, clean paper.
